‘Sell me this pen,’ demands Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street. That –as he has since revealed in real life, in his new career as a motivational speaker— is an exercise that very quickly reveals to the interviewer whether they’re meeting somebody who knows how to sell, or somebody who’s new to the game.

After their most recent classes, the Economics and Management students are no longer new to the game. They have been working in different groups to not only sell a pen to somebody sitting directly in front of them, but to mount imagined advertising campaigns to sell multiple pens to as wide a base as possible. Today, they will be presenting their ideas and their campaigns to the rest of their class, when they will have their strategies evaluated and critiqued. It’s a project that the students have enormously enjoyed— so much so, in fact, that they wanted to stay at the end of the class to carry on with their work!

In the afternoon, a similar spirit was present. On Tuesday afternoon, there was a range of activities and tours available, one of which was the Scavenger Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt was an energetic and deeply exciting afternoon— so much so, in fact, that many opted to do it again on Thursday, this time persuading others to come and join them.

Another group visited Christ Church, to experience for themselves a taste of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts in the awe-inspiring Great Hall, marvelling at the grandeur and richness of its paintings and panels. Afterwards, abuzz with excitement and conversation, they headed across the road to George and Danver’s, located opposite the gates of Christ Church College. Famous across Oxford for its ice-cream, and beloved by students and residents alike, the Christ Church party were not disappointed.

On George Street, meanwhile, the final group was in the cinema, where they were presented with a choice of films. Some opted for Spider-Man: Homecoming, the latest in the Marvel series, and were thrilled by the agility and courage of its relatable protagonist; others chose Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s most recent creation, a gritty and moving tale of overcoming odds, and bravery in the face of overwhelming foes.

In the evening, many students joined the drumming workshop, picking up some new rhythms and even trying out some moves to their friends’ sounds; others played board games, from chess to poker, while out on the pitches, students played Frisbee, croquet and basketball, perhaps inspired by the athletic achievements of Spider-Man himself.
