Sunday saw the start of the final session of the summer for students in Oxford, and the sun certainly had its hat on to welcome our new cohort into this historic city. Queen’s opened its hidden doors once more for another group of talented young individuals, and we look forward to everything that these final two weeks have to bring.
From 11am students began arriving in college, and it is safe to say that everyone was hugely impressed by their surroundings. As the new students had the chance to take in the beautiful architecture of the college throughout the afternoon, they had high expectations for the coming weeks.
Once everyone had arrived, it was time for the welcome talks, which a few of the parents also attended. These talks are designed to allow the students to get to know the routine here a little better, however, they also stress the importance of acting with respect and sensitivity in this international community.
Following the talks, it was time to wave goodbye to the parents, and although some of the students were sad to wave off their loved ones, they were also excited to start a new academic adventure with everyone here at Queen’s. They began to introduce themselves to one another – chatting a little about their journeys to get here and discussing what programmes they would be on.
Finally, it was time for a little fun, as our counsellors and junior deans ran a few ice-breaking games like splat and two truths and a lie. This was a good way for everyone to get to know a little about one another. After a tiring day of travelling, everyone was eager to get into their beds to prepare for their first full day on Monday.
