The sun was shining brightly for arrivals day as Lady Margaret Hall opened its doors to its first cohort of students. Oxford has been alive with activity this weekend, as all of our colleges now welcome their students for the start of their summer programmes.
As everyone arrived throughout the afternoon, it was fantastic to see the students really trying to get to know one another better. Whilst enjoying some refreshments on the lawn, all of the students introduced themselves and spoke a little about their journeys from across the globe. Once introductions were underway, it was time to head into the college for some welcome talks. All of our welcome talks aim to point out the crucial aspects of our programmes, namely the importance of academic rigour as well as an atmosphere of respect and sensitivity within this international environment.
After the talks were over, it was time to wave goodbye to some of the parents who had come along with their children. Then dinner was served in the college and everyone headed to enjoy a delicious meal as they chatted some more about themselves.
After dinner, the counsellors hosted a fun selection of icebreaker games to get everyone socialising. All of these activities were well received and it was clear that they worked well to bring everyone out of their shell a little bit. Being far away from home, it can often be a little daunting to open up, however after a little time all of the students were chatting.
Following a busy and tiring day, everyone seemed keen to get to their new rooms for a good night’s rest before the first classes of the programmes begin bright and early tomorrow morning!
