The renowned and highly anticipated Debate arrived for Session 6 students this week, as they used their keen argumentative skills to fight for first prize.

The topical motion was introduced: ‘This House believes in Unilateral Nuclear Disarmament’. Such a relevant discussion certainly made for some strong viewpoints on both sides and set the stage for a fiery debate.

With the debate underway, the chosen debaters on stage presented their logical and well-structured arguments, citing their extensive research and attempting to undermine the opposition from the beginning. The opposing team suggested that unilateral nuclear disarmament was dangerous, leaving some countries defenceless against those still holding powerful chemical weapons. The proposing debaters retorted that it was crucial for someone to make the first move away from nuclear warfare and such a policy was arguably the only way to do so.

The talent of the pupils was impressive and the argumentative rally that whipped back and forth between opposing sides was almost too thrilling to bear!

After the selected debaters had provided the audience with their viewpoints, it was time for the rest of the student body to get involved. Interesting snippets of opinion emerged from pupils in the audience, who offered their perspective on the matter. The range and diversity of thoughts presented by the crowd shaped the argument and gave the key speakers something to think about as they attempted to persuade the audience to their side.

The activity was greatly enjoyed and it was wonderful to see how many pupils felt comfortable enough with their peers to offer their opinions.
