ORA pupils at LMH spent their last few days of Session 4 enjoying ice cream, performing hidden talents, listening to guest speakers and dissecting sheep hearts.
Ice Cream Truck
ORA students staying at LMH were lucky enough to have a visit from an ice cream truck this week to reward them for their hard work during Session 4. With the truck playing its sweet, sweet tune to notify everyone of its arrival, pupils ran outside to be first in line to grab a naughty treat.
With the amazingly warm weather in England at the moment, the ice cream truck proved extremely popular and cooled students down with its delicious assortment of frozen snacks.
Guest Speakers
Guest speakers arrived at LMH this week to talk to pupils about a variety of novel and new concepts.
Alice Fookes, an important member of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), spoke about Gender Equality and exactly what that means in the modern world. Though it’s a topic that seemingly has lots of media attention, the importance and relevance of gender equality is unparalleled in modern society. The talk captivated our male and female students alike and definitely provided food for thought.
The other guest speaker was Colin Brown, who gave a fascinating talk on the Colonisation of the Planet Mars. Speaking about everything from life and water on Mars to transportation options, the talk was intellectually stimulating in a number of significant areas.
ORA’s Got Talent
Singers, dancers, comedians and magicians emerged onto LMH’s stage in the exciting ORA’s Got Talent. The students have all become so close in the last couple of weeks but it was still fun to see them revealing hidden skills that no one knew about.
The group singing performances were especially enjoyable, with duets joyfully filling the room and larger ensembles creating impressive harmonies. Dances revealed the nimble students, stand-up shows highlighted the comics and guitar playing showed the romantics. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with some amazing performances.
Dissection Practical
Students got close to sheep hearts this week as they participated in their Introduction to Medicine lessons.
Learning to slice and cut open the organs, pupils used their knowledge to identify key chambers and arteries in the heart. Many found the exercise to be extremely fascinating and they enjoyed matching up their practical findings with their notes.
Although the class revealed slightly squeamish tendencies in some, it was great to see that, after an initial adjustment period, everyone got really involved with the workshop and were able to efficiently carry out dissection tasks.
Although Session 4 is now over, we know that ORA students at LMH had a wonderful time forging friendships and learning new things. We hope to welcome them back next summer and wish them all the best for the future.
