Week 1 at St Catharine’s Cambridge has been action-packed, with ORA students solving murders, creating art, punting, decorating cakes, partying and competing in Sports Day.
Cake Decorating
Cake decorating was a popular activity this week with ORA students at St Catharine’s. With an array of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, students cracked out their tubes of icing, jars of sprinkles and bags of marshmallows to create masterpieces of the cake variety. The results were delicious and quickly engulfed by the proud group of students.
Punting
A stay in Cambridge is not complete without punting, a traditional activity in this ancient city. Students took to the high seas (also known as the River Cam) and boarded their vessels for an afternoon of sailing past some of the city’s most famous and impressive sights.
Taking it in turns to punt down the river, pupils enjoyed the afternoon as they floated past world-famous colleges and beneath the iconic Mathematical Bridge and Bridge of Sighs. Photo opportunities were not missed as you can see below! Some marvelled at the variety of ducks and geese on the River, many of which they hadn’t seen before. It was a jovial afternoon and a memorable experience for students in Cambridge.
Art Workshops
Students got creative in their art workshop using the ink and bleach method during week 1. When the bleach and ink touch, a chemical reaction creates a gorgeously golden colour and produces some stunning results. Pupils were captivated by the magical reaction and immersed themselves in the activity, creating all kinds of mesmerising patterns and scenes.
Harry Potter Murder Mystery
A mysterious evening was in store for students at St Catharine’s, as they equipped their finest detective skills to solve the Harry Potter themed Murder Mystery.
With little to go on besides their wits and observational skills, it was up to our pupils to work together to find the culprit. Clues from the Harry Potter crew helped the group and students quickly teamed up with their favourite magical characters to solve the crime. It was a stimulating evening and pupils enjoyed the Harry Potter theme, ensuring they already had extensive background knowledge of the suspects in question and making the event a wonderful success.
Sports Day
With running shoes laced up and faces painted, students took to the field to compete in the renowned Sports Day event.
As they completed their serious stretches – showing they meant business – pupils joined together in teams to fight for the glory of winning the day. Balls went flying, cheers were echoing and rivalries were flaring as the day continued with thrilling races and events. It was a marvellous demonstration of teamwork and solidarity and students were well and truly worn out by the end of it.
Party
Friday night saw the return of the famous end-of-week party at St Catharine’s, with a Hawaiian beach vibe creating waves of excitement.
Complete with a surfboard balancing game (which counsellors and students alike enjoyed), the party was a roaring success. Ocean-blue lighting and strobes created a buzzing atmosphere for the dancing, with our resident DJ providing the hottest and catchiest music for the evening. Students partied the night away (well, until curfew at 10:30pm!) and let loose to celebrate the end of a successful week.
With week 2 already here, our students at St Catharine’s have lots to look forward to, including a trip to the West End to watch the Phantom of the Opera, a Talent Show and Graduation.
